This 7,500 sq.ft. residence sits atop two acres in Great Falls, Virginia. The design and strategic placement of the house on the site allowed the residence to adjoin an existing barn structure that was converted to a three bay garage while the angled façade design captures the most dramatic views to the surrounding environment.
The architectural elements of the design include steep roof points broken here and there with gable sections and barrel vault dormers. The addition of a raised stone base, gently sloping stone chimneys and rough hewn timber porch beams and brackets have created a Norman French Country House feel to the structure which suited the Owner’s vision for their home.
The wide radiating stone stair entry and porch lead to a spacious and open interior with the foyer, formal parlor, dining room, “theater” kitchen, breakfast room, home office, laundry, mud room, and master suite on the first level. The winding main stairway leads to three bedrooms and a large “hobby space” on the upper level where the sloped ceilings, dormers, gables, and vaults add individual character to each room. The main floor level is connected to the large walk-out basement through a generous rear stairway with dramatic natural lighting. The basement was designed to house family favorite spaces including game room, home theater, and the future build-out of the Owner’s dream project of a 1200 sq.ft. model railroad.
The focal point of the home is the 24 ft. x 20 ft. sunken Grand Family Room. Set at a 45 degree angle to the rest of the house, the full height windows and transom glass bring in light from two sides to a 20 ft. high space topped with exposed timber plank ceiling set on hand crafted curved queen post trusses.
The detailing of the trusses, along with the wide board flooring, hand made tiling, and stone countertops, hardware, and wall treatments that were carefully selected by the Owners have reinforced the French Country theme and added to the warmth and inviting appeal of the home.
